NFL Draft 2011May 5, 2011 12:51 am
Of seven Spartans that were eligible in the draft only two were actually drafted: LB Greg Jones (round 6; Giants) and CB Chris L. Rucker (round 6; Colts). I had no doubt these two solid defensive standouts would be drafted.
However, of the other five that weren't drafted, there is one Spartan I'd like to make a case for that he should have been drafted or at least some team should look to bring in as an undrafted free agent: WR Mark Dell. Dell is a solid, tough-minded football player. He is not afraid to go across the middle and make the tough catch and take the big hit. If I were to compare him to a WR in the NFL it would have to Donald Driver. As a Spartan fan and a Packer fan I have been able to watch both players a lot and these guys are very similar. Their style, the way they just carry themselves, the things that I mentioned earlier about toughness are all similarities they share. I really feel if some team would have drafted him in the later rounds they would have gotten a steal. Now if someone would pick him up off of free agency again they would have themselves a steal. Anyway, congratulations to Greg Jones and to Chris L. Rucker (who now gets to possibly practice against Colt WR and former teammate Blair White) on their new teams and good luck.
